Stay Cool This Summer: Get your Auto Air Conditioner Fixed

During winter, you neglect the much needed repair of your automobile’s air conditioner. But, now that the warmer months of summer are approaching, you realized that it’s times to take it in to the shop to get it fixed. It’s no fun driving around in a hot vehicle and arriving at the mall or supermarket sweaty and sticky. Not to mention, the smell of sweat this is left behind in your car.

If your air conditioner somewhat works but is not efficient, that should also be reason enough for you to take it for repairs. A faulty air conditioner can lead to more significant damage if not dealt with. For instance, if the air conditioner is low on coolant or there is something wrong with the electrical wiring, this can impact the compressor. In addition, the vehicle’s air conditioning system and the rest of the electrical wiring are all connected. So, if there is an electrical problem with the AC, this can lead to issues with the rest of the vehicle.

For those reasons, you should not hesitate to get your air conditioner fixed if you notice any problems. Additionally, auto air conditioners are usually quick, easy and inexpensive to fix. Many times, problems are associated with the refrigerant which either needs to be flushed, refilled or there is a leak.

If your automotive air conditioning system needs to be repaired, you should take it to a professional. This is a car repair that you should not attempt yourself because the air conditioning system is built around the engine. Also, if you were to take a look at the repair instructions for auto air conditioning systems, you would notice warnings about the illegal nature of releasing Freon gas into the atmosphere as well as the fact that wearing protective clothing is of the utmost importance. This would suggest that this type of repair is of a sensitive nature and that it is risky for someone who does not have proper training to undertake it.

There are certain things related to the air conditioning system that a professional knows and understands, for example, the amount of refrigerant that your particular vehicle uses. In addition, there is specific tools and equipment that may be needed to fix the car’s air conditioning which not everyone would have at hand.

If you notice any of the following issues with your auto air conditioning, then do not hesitate to get it fixed:

  • If there is no cold air being produced
  • The fan or blower is not working
  • There is a strange sound coming from the fan, blower or AC
  • If there is a bad odor coming from the air conditioner
  • The car overheats
  • If the air conditioner has never before been serviced

You should have your auto air conditioner checked out by a professional if any of these issues apply to you. Sometimes these issues indicate something simple and inexpensive to fix so why suffer in the heat when you don’t have to?

Four Popular Firestone Tire Models

Tires are more than just circles of rubber.  They are largely responsible for the safety of you and your family or other passengers.  Tires are also an important element in maximizing your vehicle’s longevity and performance.  Of particular concern these days is the cost of gas, and your tires can actually have a significant effect of your vehicle’s level of fuel economy, so that’s another important consideration.  With all of these things in mind, the Firestone motto of “A Tradition of Innovation” is important, as this means they are a company dedicated to delivering consumers the latest technologies in tire design and production; both of which are important considerations for knowing that you are getting the most out of your tires … and your vehicle.  With that in mind, here are four of the best known and most popular Firestone tire models you might consider for your next tire replacement.

  • FIRESTONE DESTINATION LE: An all season radial tire designed for fairly rigorous and continuous use, the Firestone Destination LE is a perfect choice for light pickups, vans and SUV’s.  This tire is made to perform in a variety of conditions and on all types of road surfaces through advanced tread design, which also serves to provide a quiet ride with reduced tire noise production.  The asymmetrical tread pattern ensures all weather stability, while advanced edging and groove technology promote smooth cornering capabilities and improved performance on snow and ice.

  • FIRESTONE DESTINATION A/T: An all-terrain tire designed specifically for high performance in all types of weather – both on the road, and off – the Destination A/T model line from Firestone features UNI-T technology to merge comfort with superior performance and extended tread wear.  This is a highway stable tire suitable for year round use, but also utilizes Long Link Carbon for enhanced strength and off-road capabilities.  This tire model is suitable for pickups, light trucks and utility vehicles, alike.

  • FIRESTONE WINTER FORCE: An extreme snow tire, the Firestone Winter Force is rated for severe snow performance by the Rubber Association of Canada as well as the Rubber Manufacturers Association.  Specialized tread design, featuring Directional Tread Pattern technology, is optimized with advanced siping to create a 3-dimensional tread pattern for maximum traction in snow, ice and mud.

  • FIRESTONE FIREHAWK WIDE OVAL:  This ultra-high performance tire is inspired by racing.  The current version of the Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval performance tire features UNI-T technology, delivering precise handling, tight cornering, and exceptional traction on both dry and wet surfaces.  For serious performance at high speed, this tire is also offered in a pro “Indy 500” variety.

Firestone has built a reputation for its product based on a true passion and dedication for delivering exceptional value with exceptional products.  As such, this is one of the most popular tire brands.  By staying true to their signature “Tradition of Innovation,” Firestone remains an industry leader in tire performance, safety, quality and technology innovation for continual improvement in all of these areas.

Tips for Taking Care of your Auto Air Conditioning

Nowadays, air conditioning in motor vehicles is standard and not a luxury. This technology has enabled us to enjoy a comfortable ride with cool air circulating within the interior of the vehicle. It can be quite uncomfortable to sit in a hot vehicle under the sweltering heat of the sun. In addition, it can be dangerous in cases of extreme heat for the elderly and young children. So, because air conditioning is important, you should practice proper maintenance so it works effectively in keeping you cool.

Here are some tips which can help you experience cool temperatures in your car when you need it most.

1. Ensure that you clean the interior of your vehicle. You may have to get your carpets and upholstery deep cleaned to ensure that dust and dirt do not result in mold and spores. This can create unpleasant odors when the air conditioning is turned on.

2. It’s good practice to park underneath a shady area especially if your car will be there for a long period of time. The excess heat means that the car will take a longer time to cool so the air conditioner will have to work harder.

3. Do not smoke in the vehicle as the fumes can pollute the evaporator which can cause unpleasant odors which are hard to get rid of.

4. Practice to turn the air conditioner off before you switch the engine off as this will put additional strain on the engine and battery when you try to start the vehicle with the air conditioning on.

5. If you notice anything strange such as noises coming from the AC system, you should take it to be inspected by a mechanic as soon as possible. If there is damage to something major such as the compressor and the problem is caught before it affects any other component, this can save you hundreds of dollars in repairs.

6. You should have the air conditioning system serviced once per year. This may involve replacing parts such as filters and re-gassing. Adding your vehicle’s air conditioning to your car’s servicing list can extend the life of the system, enhance the quality of air and prevent harmful mold and bacteria from being inhaled.

7. Periodically turn your air conditioning on even during winter so it remains in good condition for when you really need it. The compressor can be damaged by it not being used for long periods.

8. Even during the summer when the temperatures rise, you shouldn’t be tempted to blast your air conditioner on the highest setting. This will require a lot of labor from your engine. Instead, set the climate control to only a couple degrees cooler than the outside temperature as this is not only economical and takes less power from the engine but will also help the system to last longer.

9. When you are driving at speeds of 30 mph, then depend on rolled down windows to cool the interior. Use the air conditioner for higher speeds. Also, use recycled air to reduce the load on the engine for a comfortable temperature.

Follow these tips and you will have a well maintained air conditioning system and it will add years to your car overall.

How to Keep your Auto Air Conditioning Staying Cool

While it is recommended that you leave the servicing and repairs of your auto air conditioning system to licensed professionals, it is helpful if you know about the fundamentals. It is useful when you can detect whether or not the system is working efficiently and when it’s time to take your car for repairs. Here are some basic facts which can make this hot summer a breeze to tackle (at least where your car’s A/C is concerned).

  • If you notice any weird smells coming from your air conditioning vents, then there may be a build-up of bacteria. Microorganisms, mold and fungi will grow if your air conditioning system is not used regularly or just naturally overtime. This leads to unpleasant odors and the mold, fungus and bacteria can potentially give you headaches and flu-like symptoms.

  • Your air conditioning system may need to be recharged if the air isn’t cold enough. You may not even notice the difference right away, especially if the car is new to you. However, if you get the chance to compare it with someone else’s air conditioning, then it may be easier to tell the difference. The refrigerant gas which is used to power the system can deplete over time, especially during the long periods when the system is not being used like in the cooler months. Getting the refrigerant re-gassed can get you off to a cool start this summer.

  • If you use your air conditioner all year round without extensive periods of breaks then you can help to maintain it. Leakage is caused when the “o” ring seals are allowed to dry out. Keeping your system running even during cold periods will keep it lubricated and sealed tight. Leaks are sometimes caused from cracks in the hoses. If the refrigerant has the chance to work, it carries lubricating oil to the compressor and keeps the seals and hoses from getting dry and cracked.

  • If you notice unusual sounds coming from the air conditioning then you should have it checked out immediately. A noisy A/C system can be as a result of a damaged compressor. This is the most expensive part of the system as it is known as the “heart” of the system. It basically affects all the other components so if it seizes up then you may have to replace other parts as well which will make the cost of the repairs even more expensive.

  • Inexperienced drivers tend to get concerned when they notice a pool of water under the car. This water is from the A/C after it has been used. The water comes from the evaporator which has a drain tube that permits the condensation to drain away from the vehicle.

  • If you notice damp carpets or misting inside the vehicle, this can be as a result of a blocked or detached drain tube. This is an easy and low-cost fix.

Just as how you would take your car in for an oil change or to get your tires rotated, you should take it in for a servicing of the air conditioning as well. Having it serviced once per year will help to prevent any malfunctioning of its parts. This will ultimately save you money and give you the coolest ride over those sizzling summer months.
